This caramel apple dump cake is a simple, comforting dessert that requires minimal effort. Layer canned apple pie filling, dry cake mix, caramel bits, and butter, then bake or slow cook for a gooey, buttery fall treat perfect for potlucks.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 (21 ounce) can apple pie filling
  • 1 (15.25 ounce) box yellow cake mix
  • 1 cup caramel bits or chips
  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, melted
  • Optional: Vanilla ice cream for serving

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) if baking. If using a slow cooker, lightly grease a 6-quart slow cooker insert.
  2. If baking, pour the apple pie filling into the bottom of a 9×13 inch baking dish. If using the slow cooker, pour the filling into the bottom of the insert.
  3. Sprinkle the dry yellow cake mix evenly over the apple layer. Do not mix.
  4. Scatter the caramel bits evenly over the cake mix layer.
  5. Slowly drizzle the melted butter over the entire surface, aiming to cover the cake mix as much as possible.
  6. For Oven Method: Bake for 40 to 50 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the filling is bubbly.
  7. For Slow Cooker Method: Cover and cook on LOW for 3 to 4 hours or on HIGH for 1.5 to 2 hours, until the topping is set and golden.
  8. Let the dump cake cool slightly before serving warm with vanilla ice cream.

Notes

  • This recipe uses yellow cake mix, but you can substitute butter pecan cake mix for an extra layer of flavor.
  • For the best caramel distribution, try to cover as much of the dry cake mix with butter as you can.
  • This low effort apple bake is excellent for potlucks and large gatherings.
