Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 (8 ounce) package cream cheese, softened
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup heavy whipping cream, cold
  • 1 box (3.9 ounces) instant vanilla pudding mix
  • 2 cups cold milk
  • 4 cups cubed pound cake or angel food cake
  • 4 medium apples (like Honeycrisp or Granny Smith), peeled, cored, and sliced
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1 cup thick caramel sauce (store-bought or homemade)
  • 1/2 cup graham cracker crumbs (optional, for crunch)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the cheesecake layer: In a medium bowl, beat the softened cream cheese, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract until smooth. In a separate bowl, whip the heavy cream until stiff peaks form. Gently fold the whipped cream into the cream cheese mixture. Set aside.
  2. Prepare the pudding layer: Whisk the instant vanilla pudding mix with the cold milk for two minutes until slightly thickened. Let it stand for five minutes.
  3. Prepare the apples: In a saucepan, combine the sliced apples, lemon juice, cinnamon, and brown sugar. Cook over medium heat for 5 to 7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the apples are tender-crisp. Remove from heat and let cool slightly.
  4. Assemble the trifle: Select a large glass trifle bowl. Create the first layer with one-third of the cubed cake. Drizzle lightly with some caramel sauce.
  5. Add the next layer: Spread half of the cheesecake mixture evenly over the cake. Top the cheesecake layer with half of the cooked apple mixture. Sprinkle with half of the graham cracker crumbs, if using.
  6. Repeat the layers: Add another third of the cake cubes, drizzle with more caramel, then spread the remaining cheesecake mixture. Top with the rest of the apples.
  7. Finish the trifle: Place the final layer of cake cubes on top. Drizzle generously with the remaining caramel sauce. If you reserved any whipped cream, you can use it for a final decorative topping.
  8. Chill the trifle for at least 2 hours before serving to allow the layers to set.

Notes

  • You can make the spiced apples and cheesecake filling a day ahead to save time on assembly.
  • For a richer flavor, substitute the vanilla pudding with butterscotch pudding mix.
  • If you prefer a softer texture, skip the graham cracker crumbs and drizzle extra caramel sauce over the top layer instead.
